The more history I learn ad fontes, the more I believe that this historical stoic pessimism belongs to the humanists, not the Christians. Go read the Martyrdom of Polycarp. Or City of God. Or Calvin and Luther. Or any Puritan or their worthy sons. And then marvel that these people just keep popping up in history-like sweet crocuses through the snow. Christ set His face toward Jerusalem- for joy joy joy. A joy was set before Him. Psalm 2 + Romans 1:4 should be all we need to get on with it.
